While we think of prayer as addressed to God, it also has important social and pedagogic functions. Prayer binds together the worshipers' community and inculcates its beliefs and values. We will look at prayers in the Bible, especially psalms, to see what they may have meant to the ancient Jewish community and what they teach us about that community's situation and hopes for the future.
