We will explore the important roles of Jewish women in care for the dead, funerals, burial, and funeral meals from biblical times through the Second Temple period. Our exploration will bring insights into the role of Jewish women in community formation, including spurring the creation of the nascent Christian church that began as a sect of Judaism. This engagement with the past will help us to see the ways in which Jewish women continue to create Jewish community through these life cycle rituals.
